NetSuite Segment Name Mapping
These can be used in reports, as filters and columns, and to segment data
These segments are “required” to be filled in by Finance Policy, however, they are not system mandated. Segments must be assigned at the line level of all transactions, it is not entered on the header level
The default NetSuite segments have been renamed for our purposes, and are outlines below:
MakeWay Name | NS Name | Type | Usage | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
Designation |
Department |
3-Level Hierarchy |
Projects Purpose Funds Donor-Advised Funds |
This is a single field, and the transaction lines should always be coded to the lowest level possible. |

Single-Level List |
Operating Departments, and Programmatic Departments |
There are no longer different departments for Operating and Programmatic – e.g. in NAV there were two departments for Strategic Programs, PR-007 and OP-1805, in NetSuite, these are a single department segment. |
Award |
Class |
2-Level Hierarchy |
Revenue codes for tracking expenses against Award, Fee for Service, or Major Gift opportunities |
This is a single segment, in NetSuite the record does not contain information such as Funder, Start/End dates, etc. as this is kept in SalesForce as the system of record. The system can create “child” awards which would roll-up to the parent. |
Sub-Award |

Fund |
Custom Segment |
Single-Level List |
Fund classification: Internally Restricted Externally Restricted Unrestricted |
There is a script that runs to populate the fund class when entering transactions in the UI. The fund class is stored on the Designation record and populated when a Designation is selected. |

Single-Level List |
Interest Areas |
This custom list will be used to identify the Interest Area (or Focus Area) for programmatic Grants. The list is not yet finalized. |
